Where the Art is Always Good

Most mornings, after a sobering hour long walk through beautiful Cedars, artist Albert Scherbarth, with his requisite cup of coffee returns to the studio/shop where he lives with Rottweilers Gretal and Eudora, a few cats and a flock of chickens.

He summons the muses. He waits. Then, sometimes in a trickle, other times, an avalanche, the images come into focus, and he scratches, Zen-like, Prismacolor pencils in hand, on his large-scale drawings with delight.

It is a good day making art.

Other days, he welds. Broken stuff. An art fence. A sculptural or architectural element. Or he works in wood. A custom wine rack for a loft’s kitchen. Or, more recently, outdoor dog playground equipment that he designed for neighbor Downtown Dog.

“Every day is different,” says Scherbarth. “I never know what I might be asked to consult on, imagine, or make.”

As a result, his work is constantly transmuting and evolving, he says, which keeps his mind active, inquisitive.

“At the very least,” he laughs, “it staves off senility.”

Like Nick Cave sings, “I ain’t afraid of change, I’m afraid of things stayin’ the same!”
